The following portraits are of 10 individual artists who are, or were, students of Newcastle Universitys Fine Art Department. I asked for permission of the artists in the Fine Art Department who were willing to be photographed, as well as granting me access to their studio space while they were working. After documenting the artist in their space, I later met with them to view the images as well as to conduct photo-elicitation, which is showing the artists photographs during a meeting in order to gain more information from them. I then asked them to write their reflections about their creative process, how the objects in the photograph inspire their work and how does sharing a studio space affect their work process.
Photographing an artists personal studio space sheds light on the many processes that artists employ in their work. What will be discovered? The artists studio is a place for creating, for ideas, for experimentation. What is in the room? How is it organized or not organized, all reflects the work of an artist.
Unfortunately the artists critical reflection is not below. I am currently trying to work out what would be best to capture the entire piece without losing information from the photo or text.
